Shakyamuni, whose real name is Siddhartha Gautama (623/563/480 BC - 543/483/400 BC), was a thinker, educator, religionist, philosopher, Brahmanical reformer, and the founder of Buddhism in ancient South Asia. Shakyamuni was born into a royal family in present-day southern Nepal and was a Kshatriya caste. After Buddhism was introduced to China, many believers called Shakyamuni the Buddha (Tathāgata).
Siddhartha Gautama, most commonly referred to as the Buddha ('the awakened'), was a wandering ascetic and religious teacher who lived in South Asia during the 6th or 5th century BCE and founded Buddhism.
