A thangka (Nepali pronunciation: [ˈt̪ʰaŋka]; Tibetan: ཐང་ཀ་; Nepal Bhasa: पौभा) is a Tibetan Buddhist painting on cotton, silk appliqué, usually contains portraits of bodhisattvas, giant mandalas, Tibetan Buddhist gods, images of Buddhas, and Jataka stories of the Buddha but may also cover or touch on historical events, biographies, religious ideas, scenery, everyday life, folklore, myths, Tibetan astrology, and medicine.

Typically, they depict Tibetan gods and other religious iconography such as Mandala thangka (Sand Mandala thangka), Padmasambhava thangka, green & white Tara thangka, Medicine Buddha thangka, Manjushri thangka, Kalachakra thangka, and the circle of life with people reclining in heaven and roasting in hell.

Types of Thangkas

1. Craft Classification

• Lacquered thangka (painted in colors): the most common type

2. Silk Classification

• Tshem-drub-ma is made of different kinds of silk woven by hand.
• Lhan-dr-ub-ma or dras-drub-ma: To make this kind of thangka, different kinds of silk are first cut into different shapes and then connected with needles.
• Lhan-thabs-ma: This kind is a little similar to the second, but to make this one, different shapes of silk are glued together by glue water.
• Thag-drub-ma: This thangka is woven by hand.
• Dpar-ma: To make this kind of thangka, a molding board is necessary to print the pictures into the silk.
