What is an RDWC System?

RDWC stands for Recirculating Deep Water Culture. It is a hydroponic growing method in which plant roots are suspended in a nutrient-rich, oxygenated water solution. It is an upgraded version of traditional DWC (Deep Water Culture). While a standard Deep Water Culture (DWC) system typically uses a single bucket per plant, an RDWC system connects multiple buckets (or sites) via pipes or hoses.

Here is how it works:

  1. The Controller: The system usually has a main "control bucket" or "reservoir" separate from the plant sites.

  2. The Circulation: A water pump continuously moves the nutrient solution from the control bucket, through the network of pipes, into all the plant buckets, and then back to the control bucket.

  3. The Oxygen: An air pump with air stones in each bucket (and often the controller) provides massive amounts of oxygen directly to the root zone.

  4. The Support: Plants are held in net pots filled with a hydroton (clay pebbles), allowing the roots to dangle down into the constantly moving, oxygenated water.

Advantages of an RDWC System

Compared to soil and standard DWC:

1️⃣ Faster Growth Rate

Constant oxygen + nutrient access leads to:

  • Accelerated vegetative growth

  • Larger root mass

  • Higher yield potential

Commercial growers often report 10–30% faster growth compared to soil.

2️⃣ Consistent Nutrient Distribution

Unlike standalone DWC buckets:

  • All buckets share the same nutrient solution

  • No imbalance between plants

  • Easier to manage pH and EC centrally

This is especially important for multi-site commercial setups.

3️⃣ Higher Yields

RDWC is widely used by high-performance indoor growers because:

  • Roots stay submerged and oxygenated 24/7

  • Nutrient uptake efficiency is very high

  • Plants can handle higher feeding schedules

In controlled environments, RDWC often produces larger plants than soil or coco.

4️⃣ Cleaner Root Zone

Compared to soil:

  • No pests in the medium

  • No compaction

  • Less risk of fungus gnats

  • Easier root inspection

5️⃣ Scalability

RDWC systems can scale from:

  • Small 4-site home systems

  • To large commercial 12+ site recirculating modules

This is why RDWC is popular in regulated markets like parts of the U.S.

RDWC is ideal for:

  1. Indoor controlled environment growers

  2. High-yield commercial cultivators

  3. Growers who monitor systems daily

  4. B2B commercial setups
